Motorsport: Griffin to start Formula Renault race from third row

Cork driver, Matt Griffin, racing with the Sheffield based team, Manor Motorsport, will start tomorrow's penultimate round of the British Formula Renault Championship from the third row of the grid.

Just over six tenths of a second covered the top six during the 30 minute qualifying session at Donington Park. Keith Dempsey (Cliff Dempsey Racing) qualified on the eighth row.

In championship terms, a point separates the two Irish drivers with Griffin, in fifth place, holding the slim advantage.

Eighteen year old Dempsey, who contested the European Renault series earlier in the year - missing five round of the British series - has strung together a sequence of fine results including a win in Snetterton in just his second British race and two fifth places in the last double round in Silverstone.

Griffin's team mate, Richard Antinucci claimed pole position with a lap time of one minute 31.983 seconds. Heikki Kovalainen is off pole. Tom Sisley and championship leader, Carl Breeze are on the second row.

Breeze from the Motaworld team, only needs to finish inside the top six to claim the title.
