George McAlpin extended his Ford of Ireland Ford Zetec Championship lead courtesy of a win on the eighth round in Kirkistown.

After finishing second on round seven earlier in the day, McAlpin scored a

comprehensive win over Ray Moore with Alan Dwyer, the pre-event championship leader prior to the double round, finishing third.

With McAlpin in total control, the race for second featured as many as five other drivers.

On the final bend, Michael Devaney, who won the previous round and Charlie Donnelly clashed although both finished, Donnelly was fifth with Devaney’s suspension damaged car coming home seventh.

Result:

Round 8: 1. G. McIntyre; 2. R. Moore; 3. A. Dwyer; 4. A. Ring.

McAlpin stretches his advantage over Dwyer to eight points with Alan Ring a further 16 points adrift in third.

There are two rounds remaining, both will take place in Mondello Park.

Championship positions: 1. McAlpin 85 points; Dwyer 77 points; Ring 61 points; Donnelly 48 points & Devaney 45 points.

Matt Griffin was the best Irish qualifier for tomorrow’s ninth round of the British Formula Renault Championship at Oulton Park.

He qualified ninth, Robbie Coleman’s 14th; Gordon Coleman 21st and Keith

Dempsey 23rd. Championship leader, Carl Breeze is on pole.

Irish crew, Hugh Dunne/Greg Shinnors (Subaru Legacy), are 81st. in the Neste Rally Finland.

They were originally seeded at 123.

The event finishes tomorrow.
