Motorsport: Teenager Devaney wins in Kirkistown

The seventh round of the Ford of Ireland Ford Zetec Championship at Kirkistown has been won by Michael Devaney.

The Dublin teenager qualified off pole and went into the lead on the first lap.

In wet conditions, he held his composure and finished ahead of George McAlpin, who moves into the championship lead.

The Northern Ireland driver, four points behind pre-event championship leader, Cork’s, Alan Dwyer, is now three points ahead of his rival.

Dwyer, who has led the series since the start, gambled on slicks, spun and finished seventh.

Charlie Donnelly and Kerry’s, Alan Ring, were third and fourth respectively.

The second race takes place this afternoon with McAlpin and Devaney on the front row, Donnelly and Ray Moore on the second row and Alan Ring and Alan Dwyer on row three.

Championship after Round 7:

McAlpin 70 points; Dwyer 67 points and Ring 53 points.

Four Irish drivers including the Coleman brothers, Robbie and Gordon, sons of legendary rally ace, Billy, will race in tomorrow's British Formula Renault

Championship at Oulton Park.

Robbie has switched from Team DFR and has joined Fortec Motorsport, while the younger, Gordon has taken his seat at DFR.

Teenage sensation, Keith Dempsey, who won in only his second race in the British series and Mathew Griffin (Manor Motorsport) complete the quadruple Irish challenge.

In testing, Robbie Coleman was seventh fastest with Griffin tenth, Dempsey 12th and Gordon Coleman 18th.

Qualifying takes place this afternoon.
