Motorsport: Dempsey claims first win

Irish driver, Keith Dempsey won the seventh round of the British Formula Renault Championship at Snetterton.

Driving with the Cliff Dempsey Racing Team, the 2000 Irish Formula Europa champion decided to run on wet tyres.

It proved effective almost immediately, as heavy rain enveloped the Norwich track.

It was an obvious disadvantage for the 21 other drivers who opted to go out on slicks.

Dempsey had over eight seconds to spare over championship leader, Carl Breeze.

Cork ace, Mathew Griffin crashed out on the tenth lap.

In Motorcycling, the Mid-Antrim Road Races saw the in-form Adrian Archibald complete a treble.

Riding a range of Hondas, he won the Open Race, the Regal 600 and the Grand Final.

He also set the fastest lap on the 3.6-mile Clough circuit near Ballymena.

Dermot Carnegie (Ford Focus WRC) and John McCluskey (Peugeot 306) were the top two in the Mondello Rallysprint.

David James won Saturday's rallysprint at Mondello edging out Michael Curtis.

In the Ford Ka Challenge, John Carroll was the victor from Barry Barrable.

Carroll has a tow point lead in the series.

In Killarney, the Darby O'Gill's Autocross Championship double-header, there were wins for Brian Turner (Opel Special) and Willie Kavanagh (Suzuki Special).
