Motorsport: Evans makes it four Lurgan Pk wins

Gwyndaf Evans, partnered by SEAT Sales Director, Gary Savage, proved too quick for the opposition in the SEAT Lurgan Park Rally.

Evans, in his SEAT World Rally Car, was fastest on all of the nine stages and he finished with a winning margin of 25.6 seconds over the Subaru World Rally Car of Derek McGarrity with another Subaru WRC, that of Kenny McKinstry/Mark

McDonnell recovering to take third overall.

Evans built a steady lead and by the fourth stage, he was just over five seconds ahead of McGarrity with Maurice Gass and Gary white tying for third spot.

It was a particularly strong performance from White, his Escort Cosworth a match for some of the more sophisticated machinery.

Kenny McKinstry, a nine-time winner, saw his aspirations for a tenth win evaporate on the first stage when he overshot a junction.

With little between the top drivers, any indiscretion was severely punished as Kenny dropped well outside the top ten.

As McGarrity tried to stay in touch, Evans was always well in control. Not surprisingly, McKinstry clawed his way back into contention and with a string of fine performances on the final few stages, he ended the day in third place, some ten seconds adrift of McGarrity.

Trevor Moore’s, fourth place was indicative of a stunning drive in the “Park” while Denis Biggerstaff (Metro 6R4) had to settle for sixth.

Elsewhere, the top ten was rounded off Stephen Harron (Subaru Legacy), Gary White (Escort Cosworth), James Gillen (Escort Cosworth) and Wesley Patterson (Sierra Cosworth).
