Motorsport: McRae gets third victory in World Rally Championship

Colin McRae has taken his third consecutive victory in the current World Rally Championship.

Both Carlos Sainz and Richard Burns retired on the final stages.

Petter Solberg (Subaru) finished second with Harri Rovanpera (Peugeot) taking third. Pre-event championship leader, Tommi Makinen was fourth.

On today’s second stage, Burns put his Subaru off the road and dropped down to seventh.

On the final stages, his Subaru succumbed with driveshaft problems while Sainz also lost out.

He was set to take second and the championship lead until his Ford Focus RS World Rally Car developed engine problems on the final stage.

McRae and Makinen, both on 30 points, share the lead after seven rounds of the WRC.

In the RT 2000, Brendan Donegan had a start to finish victory with Jonathan Fildes and David Donegan completing the podium places.

Fildes made several attempts to overtake Cunnelly, finally completing the move on the fifth of the eight lap race.
