Motorsport: McAlpin claims pole at Kirkistown
After claiming pole position, George McAlpin went on to win the third round of the Irish Formula Ford Zetec Championship at Kirkistown today.
The Portstewart chef tasted the sweet smell of success ahead of Kerry driver, Alan Ring, who set the fastest lap at the northern circuit.
Former Formula Vee driver, Ray Moore was third as fourth place was enough for Cork’s Alan Dwyer to maintain his championship lead.
Another Cork driver, Gordon Coleman was fifth. He will participate tomorrow in the Punchestown Rally Masters.
After three rounds, Dwyer has a 13-point lead over McAlpin with Ring a further four points in arrears.
In the RT2000 class, Jonathan Fildes was set to take the chequered flag but on the penultimate corner, his engine blew and he crossed the line in third.
Brendan Donegan was the race victor from his brother, David, with the luckless Fildes in third.
