Tennis: 'Mac the mouth' backed for comeback

Andre Agassi believes John McEnroe is capable of making a comeback to help the United States through their Davis Cup clash with Switzerland.

Agassi and Pete Sampras have both indicated they are unlikely to play Davis Cup for the foreseeable future.

The Americans are short on talent and there has been speculation that McEnroe could play in the doubles.

Agassi said he was sure his 41-year-old friend was capable of doing a job for the US team.

"From what I've seen, I believe he is," Agassi said.

"I've seen him practice with a lot of the doubles guys during the weeks that we were together and he still is one of the best on court.

"Whether he can do it three out of five I don't know, but at some point you have got to stop talking about it and do it. So I would like to see him try. I think he would have a heck of a shot."

McEnroe resigned as the US Davis Cup captain in November. He was replaced last month by his younger brother, Patrick McEnroe, who has said he will consider his more illustrious sibling in the doubles.
