Mayo footballer Aidan O’Shea may have given up a glamourous All Star GAA trip toAbu Dhabi at the weekend so that he could line out for Men’s Division One side, Ej Sligo All-Stars, but the sacrifice definitely paid off as the Sligo team ended Ulster University Elks’ unbeaten run at the top of the League in a famous victory which saw O’Shea contributing seven points and numerous rebounds and assists in their 96-89 point win.
2. Underdogs bite back
Meteors and Portlaoise Panthers certainly showed that you can never predict any of the weekend’s results nor, indeed, should you ever underestimate the underdog as they overcame Courtyard Liffey Celtics and DCU Mercy in two massive results in the Women’s Super League at the weekend.
3. Eight from eight makes them great
While many may be sick of hearing that Templeogue are STILL unbeaten in this year’s Super League, their eight wins from eight record deserves to be mentioned every week, particularly when Bray star Lorcan Murphy nets a whopping 34 points for his team.
4. The Kingdom is a daunting place to go
Many teams have travelled down there already and many have learned, to their peril, that Tralee is not a team to be messed with on their home court – particularly in front of a capacity home crowd of up on 1,000 people who are all baying for visitors’ blood. Indeed, UCD Marian – who had up until last weekend just one loss to their name (against Templeogue) – had to settle for second best in Kerry in an absolute thriller on Saturday evening that saw Warriors win 79-74.
5. On the sideline, you need nerves of steel
As previously mentioned, the clashes between Meteors and Courtyard Liffey Celtics (56-53) and Portlaoise Panthers and DCU Mercy (64-63) left fans and neutrals alike on the edge of their seats at the weekend, but UCC Demons cut things even finer - they were taken to overtime by Commercial.ie Éanna in the Men’s Super League (eventually winning 81-86). This is their second overtime game out of the last three. Cool heads needed on Leeside.
