Athletics Ireland director Kevin Ankrom leaving

Athletics Ireland has announced Kevin Ankrom, the association’s High Performance Director, is to leave his position at the end of the year, bringing to an end a five-year tenure that was often clouded in criticism.

The American was appointed to the role in 2011, and since then oversaw a change in structures that saw the number of athletes within the high performance system double to more than 150.

Over the past four years, 25 medals were won by athletes working in the high performance set-up, which will undoubtedly allow Ankrom’s well-paid role to be remembered in a positive light.

However, his practices drew criticism from several corners of Irish athletics during his tenure, specifically related to his ability to communicate with athletes. There was also controversy surrounding his selection policies, with published criteria either amended or outright ignored at certain points. However, even his most staunch critics would agree that coaching structures improved during his time, despite a dearth of professional coaches still existing in the country.

“The decision to leave has been a difficult one, but I feel it is the right time for me and my young family to return to the USA,” said Ankrom.

“I enjoyed my time in Ireland and particularly working with some really talented young athletes and coaches. I believe a good system is in place.”

John Foley, CEO Athletics Ireland, reflected positively on Ankrom’s tenure: “I am very satisfied he has set us on the right course through the systems he initiated in Ireland.”
