Scannell’s Glanmire bidding to complete double

Team Montenotte Glanmire and DCU Mercy clash in the Women’s Premier League final on Sunday at the Watershed, Kilkenny, as the domestic basketball season draws to a close.

Scannell’s Glanmire bidding to complete double

The Cork outfit — bidding for a third league and cup double — had a sluggish start to the campaign but found their form after Christmas with a stunning run in all competitions. Coach Mark Scannell admitted: “The opening months were difficult. Injuries hampered us but credit to the teams that defeated us, as we have no right to win every game.”

DCU Mercy defeated them twice in the regular season and Scannell hopes that run doesn’t continue in the showpiece.

“When we play DCU Mercy they are usually tactical battles, as they have outgunned us twice this season but now that the real business is about to begin I am hoping my players bring their A game.”

DCU coach Mark Ingle would love to snatch the title from their great rivals. “They have won more finals against us. For some reason they have consistently played their best basketball against us in games of this magnitude and it would be nice for a change if we could produce a season best.

“We won the regular season games but this is the one where the championship will be decided. I’m hoping we put in a good shift.”

It’s also a big weekend for the men, with the Champions Trophy set to be decide.

In the first of the semi-finals, Templeogue will be seeking revenge for the league hammering they suffered against Killester last time out.

Templeogue coach Mark Keenan said: “We won the cup and it would be nice to finish the season with another piece of silverware, but Killester are a very good side.”

League champions C&S UCC Demons meet UCD Marian in the other semi-final.

Demons played impressive basketball that saw them retain their title but co-captain Ciaran O’Sullivan is wary of UCD.

“When you look at the manner UCD Marian finished the season to secure fourth place, you realise they are a serious threat.”
