Night for the ages for LeBron James and Cleveland Cavaliers in NBA Finals
James did not quite win the game single-handedly, but went close as he collected 39 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists in 50 minutes to give Cleveland victory on Golden State’s home court, only the Warriors’ fourth home loss of the season.
It is the Cavaliers’ first ever franchise win in the NBA Finals, and levels the series at 1-1 ahead of Game 3 in Cleveland on Tuesday.
The Cavaliers had appeared to be cruising as they led 83-72 on a James three-pointer with 3:14 to go in regulation, but Golden State rallied and Stephen Curry, who endured a horrible night’s shooting, tied it up with eight seconds left to force the extra period.
It went to the wire again in overtime, but after James split a pair of free throws to give Cleveland a two-point edge with 4.4 seconds left, Curry raced up court and tried to find Klay Thompson, only for Iman Shumpert to get a hand on the ball and end the game.
Timofey Mozgov had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Cleveland, while JR Smith added 13.
Curry scored 19 for Golden State despite making only five of 23 shots from the floor, leaving Thompson to do the heavy lifting with 34 points.
