In a tame game, Demons can thank the 29-point contribution from American Lehmon Colbert for helping them gain this crucial win.

Colbert, in his second season with the Cork side, was pleased with his team’s win: “We did not play anywhere near our best but I think getting the result we came for is the one shining light,” Colbert said.

In a game where the officials tolerated too much contact, Demons’ ability to produce crucial baskets when the game hung in the balance proved crucial.

“It’s one of the toughest courts to play on in this country and to get a win there is always a tough challenge,” added Colbert.

Due to tests being taken on players after the game, Demons did not arrive back in Cork until 3am on Sunday morning so that made their clash with Swords Thunder at the Mardyke Arena yesterday that bit more demanding.

Swords are being touted as championship contenders and although pushing Demons for long periods they eventually lost 93-78, Colin O’Reilly finishing with a game high 30 points.

BFG Neptune got back to winning ways when easily accounting for DCU Saints 92-66 in a disappointing game at the Neptune Stadium. The Cork side led 50-34 at the break and with Saints’ Martin Provizors in early foul trouble they never looked like of upstaging the Leesiders.

In the biggest shock of the weekend BFG Neptune were defeated in their second game when losing to Templeogue 113-104 in an extraordinary game at the Oblate Hall. They trailed 68-51 at the break as their poor defence allowed the Dubliners chalk up their first win on the season.

There was a magnificent game in Belfast where UCD Marian edged out Belfast Star 67-65. The northerners commanded a 31-28 interval lead but with both teams trading baskets for long periods a magnificent second-half display from the UCD American Preston Ross (28) proved the difference between two evenly matched sides.

It proved a disappointing weekend for Star when they lost away to Dublin Inter yesterday 74-68.

UL Eagles produced a terrific second-half comeback on Saturday to defeat Dublin Inter 66-63.

The Shannonsiders trailed 33-21 at the interval but eye-catching performances from American Orlando Parker and Stephen King ensured them a hard earned win.

In the Women’s Premier League, leaders Meteors consolidated their place at the top of the table when easily accounting for Singletons Supervalu Brunell 84-62 with Kate O’Flaherty finishing with a game high 21 points.

Champions Team Montenotte defeated UL Huskies 86-34 and Liffey Celtics ensured Killester are still in search of their first win when defeating the Clontarf side 73-59.

DCU Mercy got back to winning ways with a comfortable 77-55 win over WIT Wildcats
