James McGee’s hopes of an extended run in the US Open were smashed in the first round at Flushing Meadows last night.

Making his initial appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam, the Irish No 1 found the step up in class too hot to handle, and he was left licking his wounds as Kazakhstan’s Alexandr Nedovyesov advanced to the second round on a 4-6 6-2 6-1 7-6 (7/3) scoreline.

McGee, the 197-ranked outsider, could not have hoped for a more favourable start to the contest, breaking his 107-ranked opponent to 15 in the opening game, and then saving two break points in the next game.
