In-form Macaulay edges out Reilly in final metres

Cycling: The in-form Ali Macaulay of Phoenix CC took victory at the end of yesterday’s feature race on the Irish cycling calendar, the Brendan Campbell Memorial in Donore.

The Belfast man, who put in a sterling performance at the recent national road race championships, went clear with Chris Reilly (Liquidworx Fitscience) on the penultimate of 13 laps.

And despite a strong chase from behind, the duo held a 15 second lead at the bell.

Macaulay proved strongest in the gallop to the line, edging home ahead of Reilly in the final metres.

The evergreen Ken Tobin of Swords CC finished on his own about 20 seconds back but a few lengths ahead of Caldwell Cycles’ Paul Mulligan for third, who in turn finished metres ahead of the bunch for fourth.

Aidan Crowley (VeloRevolution) took the bunch sprint for fifth ahead of Craig Sweetman (Stamullen M Donnelly), John Lynch (Murphy Surveys) and Damien Shaw of Aquablue.

Meanwhile, after being cancelled last month on account of a tragic road traffic collision, the National vets’ and womens’ road race championships will take place on Saturday, September 20 in Mullingar.
