‘Spike’ still eyeing world title
O’Sullivan faces Mexican Jose Medina in a middleweight bout at Boston’s House of Blues. It’s the Cork boxer’s first fight since losing to Billy Joe Saunders at Wembley Arena 11 months ago, the first defeat of his 17-fight professional career.
With the event being televised by Fox in the US, it’s a huge opportunity for O’Sullivan, who recently saw his contract with promoter Frank Warren expire and opting not to renew.
He sees tonight’s bout as an opportunity to again become a world title contender, with WBO champion Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin his main target.
“Kid Chocolate is a fight I’d like and my promoters have links with Golden Boy, so a good performance could open a path way to a world title shot for me,” said the Mahon man.
O’Sullivan certainly hasn’t chosen an easy opponent tonight, as he takes on Mexican veteran Medina, who has been in the ring with world champions during an impressive career.
The Boston bill has a distinctly Irish flavour, with Dublin’s Jamie Kavanagh (16-1-1, 7 KOs) also in action tonight. The LA-based Irishman faces former world title challenger Michael Clarke.
The main event sees undefeated lightweight Emmanuel Gonzalez take on Tevin Farmer.
