Glanmire hold firm to set up showdown with holders Brunell
Glanmire were pushed all the way by Dublin’s Oblate Dynamos before prevailing 53-50. It completed a magnificent weekend for the Cork club, who will be competing in the U18, U20 and Premier Cup finals.
In a hard-fought first half, Glanmire were fortunate to lead 32-25 with Olivia Dupuy in tremendous form with a 12-point tally.
The trend of the game didn’t change in the third quarter as Dynamos continued to pressurise their Cork opponents, and entering the last quarter, the deficit was reduced to four points, 45-41.
With a minute remaining, Glanmire’s lead was reduced to 51-50. As the tension reached fever pitch, Lauren Falvey booked Glanmire’s place with two late free throws that sealed a three- point win.
For coach Paul Kelleher, who had already guided the Premier League squad to the final, it was a day to savour. “This group of players are maturing and if they play to their potential, we will test the credentials of Brunell,” he said. “We showed the type of maturity that will stand to us in the final.”
Brunell were also involved in a tricky semi-final with DCU Mercy before eventually prevailing 63-41.
The Gurranabraher side will be favourites to retain their title and again Edel Thornton starred. After leading by 11 points at the break, Brunell extended it to 18 heading into the final quarter. Despite DCU’s brave attempt to claw back the class of Brunell prevailed.
Brunell coach Gary Blount reflected on a solid show. “What can I say about this team only their commitment and skill is a privilege to be associated with,” Blount said. “I am confident we can defend our title as we have quality players that can produce in big games.”
