Ireland’s Martyn Irvine won a bronze medal in the omnium event at the European Track Cycling Championships in Apeldoorn, Holland yesterday.

The Newtownards man secured a podium finish in the multi-round competition, courtesy of winning the points race on Saturday, and performing strongly in the concluding disciplines yesterday.

The event was won by Russian rider Victor Manakov, with Dutchman Tim Veldt netting silver. Irvine made history last February when he became the first Irishman in 117 years to win gold at the Track Cycling World Championships in Minsk.
