Breens denied a one-two in Hardelot grand prix

The former, riding Adventure de Kannan, had the upper hand on the latter, partnered by Balloon, with just five-hundredths of a second separating the pair in the 1.60m contest.

However, first place went to Briton Laura Renwick, her effort on Oz de Breve putting her almost a second ahead. Earlier, Limerick’s Shane Carey won a speed class with Ballymore Eustace. At the two-star show in Oliva, Spain, Cork’s Billy Twomey filled third place with Tinka’s Serenade in the grand prix.

In Barnadown, Gorey, Co Wexford, Gerard Clarke took the honours in yesterday HSI/Blue Grass Spring Tour class. Aboard the Cruising-sired Horseware Kellswater Crimson, the Meath-based rider had a generous three-seconds to spare on runner-up Capt Michael Kelly (Mullentine Loughall), followed by Feaha Moore (HTS Coille Mor Chin).

Fourth place for Daniel Coyle and Lady Porschell was enough to extend the Derry rider’s league lead.

Two of the remaining four legs take place next weekend, the first in Mullingar on Saturday, followed by Clare Equestrian Centre on Sunday.

At the inaugural Welcome Tour in Millstreet, Co Cork, Tom Foley claimed first and third in yesterday’s grand prix. He took the top prize on Susan Sweetnam’s Zamir, and the minor placing with Carmel King’s Paddy Fly. Stephen Moore slotted into the runner-up spot on Highfort Stud’s Merlin’s Magic.

The result capped a good weekend for Clare rider Foley, who also took the top two spots in the Junior Grand Prix at the European Championships trials in Barnadown, Co Wexford. Again it was Zamir who gave him the top spot, followed by Paddy Fly.

Jack Ryan piloted Sandballin to the only double clear in the Children on Horses grand prix, bettering Jessica Kuehnle (Best Lady) in a two-horse jump-off. Another two-horse jump-off in the Young Rider grand prix saw Sven Hadley on Adelgonde Z, get the better of Vincent Byrne and Mr Rockefeller.
