Hungry Brady one step away from another title

He may have reached this point three times in his career to date, but, ahead of tonight’s World Championships Open Singles final, Paul Brady has declared: “I’m hungrier than ever”.

Hungry Brady one step away from another title

The Cavan dual star booked his place in his fourth World Open Singles final with a straight games win last night, 21-10, 21-9 over clubmate Michael Finnegan – a surprise semi-finalist who recorded two career-best wins over American opposition on Sunday.

It was another sublime display by Brady in front of 3,000 spectators at CityWest in a match refereed by hurling and handball legend DJ Carey.

“I’m coming near the end now, this is my last Worlds and I am more motivated than ever for that reason,” said 33-year-old Brady.

Brady defeated New York’s Cesar Sala and Mexican Luis Cordova before seeing off training partner – and doubles partner – Finnegan.

Meanwhile, it will be an all-Antrim Ladies Open Singles final after Fiona Shannon and Aisling Reilly safely advanced to tonight’s decider.

Shannon, who is also a three-time defending champion, defeated Arizona’s Tracy Davis 21-6, 21-16 while Reilly saw off Kerry’s Maria Daly.

While Shannon has the edge in experience, Reilly’s power and ability to end rallies consistently with aggressive front-court play will make for an intriguing final.

In the U23 grade, Limerick senior footballer Seamus O’Carroll advanced to the semi-final where he will meet Clare’s Diarmuid Nash, with Mayo’s Stephen Cooney and Tyrone U21 footballer Caolán Daly meeting in the other semi.
