Four dreamlike weeks have slipped through London’s fingers since Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford delivered three gold medals on a never-to-be-forgotten night at the Olympic Stadium that was, inevitably, dubbed Super Saturday.

It was the day that truly released the faucet for what would ultimately prove to be a deluge of medals for the hosts but these are our ‘home’ Games as well, we have been told, and Ireland is now poised on the blocks, ready to follow suit this evening.

The spearheads are obvious. Four years ago, Jason Smyth bagged the 100m and 200m T13 titles in Beijing. Last night he set a new world record in the heats. The ‘Fastest Paralympian Alive’ he trains with Tyson Gay, who gushes about the Derry man’s elegant sprinting style.
