Seventeen-years old Sycerika McMahon, who qualified for the Olympic Games on Tuesday, finished a creditable fifth in the final of the women’s 100 metres breaststroke at the European Swimming championships at Debrecen in Hungary

McMahon was never really in contention to medal and her time of 1.08.72 was .35 of a second slower than her heat and semi-final time which earned her a place at the London Games.

The teenager was entered in the heats of the women’s 200 metres individual medley yesterday morning in Hungary but withdrew to concentrate fully on last night’s final.
