THE Elite national senior boxing championships got under way at the National Stadium last night when an action-packed programme featured eight welterweight contests involving some of the best boxers in the world.

The reigning champion, Adam Nolan (Bray/Garda), who is coached by Katie Taylor’s father, Pete, got his defence of the title off to the perfect start by outpointing Craig McCarthy (St. Paul’s, Waterford) 19-6 after throwing the proverbial kitchen sink at him in the first round which he won 10-2.

“It’s nice to knock the cobwebs out like that,” he said. “I fought Craig last year in the quarter-finals and it was a tough fight so I knew I would have to be on top of my form to win.
