The tournament surprise packets are in line for the special payment after their shock Group B victory on Wednesday triggered a clause in Cricket Ireland’s contract with sponsor, RSA Insurance.

“We had a farewell function before the team left for the World Cup and we announced a special bonus pot of €100,000 based on group stage performances and, although I cannot go into detail, I can say the team is now well placed to attain that money,” RSA spokesman Patrick Nally said.

Kevin O’Brien was Ireland’s hero in Bangalore as he scored the fastest World Cup century ever – in 50 balls – as Ireland chased down a World Cup record target of 327 to stun England. However, RSA insisted that the payment would be divided equally between all the Ireland squad members.

Nally added: “Even though Kevin’s innings was something special, there are no plans for individual rewards.

“There is another bonus payment available to the players, though, should they qualify for the quarter-finals.”
