Politicians want ISC powers cut

A CALL to curb the powers of the Irish Sports Council (ISC) was met with broad support by public representatives from across the political spectrum at Leinster House yesterday.

Politicians want ISC powers cut

Mary Coghlan, who last year agreed an out-of-court settlement with the ISC and Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI) over her dismissal as AAI chief executive in 2009, made the proposal at a session of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Sport, Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs.

The AAI and ISC have previously been afforded an audience with the committee since the conclusion of the High Court case last March and Coghlan was asked yesterday to make known her views on various governance issues in Irish sport. Those observations detailed a curtailed role for the ISC.
