Irish hockey mourns passing of ‘stalwart’ Jimmy O’Connor
Having began his hockey career as a player with Monkstown, O’Connor moved into umpiring where he achieved the International Hockey Federation (FIH) “Crown” standard and officiated in a number ofinternational games.
O’Connor subsequently went on to enjoy a long career as a technical delegate and judge at the highest level, taking in both European indoor and outdoor championships across the length and breadth of Europe.
A popular figure not just in Irish hockey circles but also in the FIH and EHF, he was well-known for his quick wit in Leinster circles.
This transferred to the international scene where he often spoke at FIH functions and receptions while also entertaining crowds with his singing skills. Irish Hockey Associationpresident Herbie Sharman yesterday paid a warm tribute to O’Connor, whose nephew Ray is currently one of the leading lights in Irish andinternational umpiring.
“The hockey community regrets to hear of the passing of Jimmy O'Connor,” said Sharman.
“He was an amazing character, achieved international status as anumpire and was a stalwart of our sport. Our sympathies to his family.”
O’Connor is survived by his wife Margaret and daughter Jane.
The funeral will take place during 10am Mass today at The Church of the Holy Family, Kill O’ The Grange, located behind Baker’s Pub at Baker’s Corner.
