Freak injury rules Barry out of Carlow classic

INJURY has forced newly crowned Rás Mumhan champion Tim Barry out of Sunday’s Des Hanlon Memorial Classic in Carlow. The teak tough Cork man, who came out of retirement to claim the title that eluded him for so long, suffered a broken rib in a freak accident at the end of the Kerry Group Rás Mumhan.

Freak injury rules Barry out of Carlow classic

He had just crossed the finish line in Killorglin with his hands raised in victory when a gust of wind blew him off his bike. Having battled his way through the pain barrier for four days, he took little notice of the matter and it was only some time later he realised the extent of the damage.

The mishap means he misses the Classic League race in Carlow – he finished second three times – but The Edge Sports Team still have a potential winner in Sean Lacey.
