Northern exposure for in-form Demons side
Moycullen have a busy weekend in pursuit of their first points in the SuperLeague with back-to-back games against Killester and Neptune.
Tomorrow night they face an in-form Killester who boast a 100% record after four games although Guard Pete Madsen believes Moycullen will be a serious test despite the club’s losing run.
“They have yet to record a win but for a new side in the league they have been pushing teams extremely close,” said Madsen.
Neptune’s visit to NUIG on Sunday afternoon will provide them with an opportunity to build on that performance in the derby thriller and collect their first SuperLeague points.
“Our performance last weekend was very encouraging,” Coach Price said. “We shot the ball very well, and made the extra pass that led to so many great looks.”
But he is not taking anything for granted against Moycullen who have underscored their right to SuperLeague status with some solid performances.
“Moycullen are a very organised side under Enda Byrt, and they are a better team than their record suggests,” said Price.
Coach Enda Byrt goes into the game with injury worries surrounding Mike Dowd who is struggling with a troublesome groin and Garnett Griffin who could be out for another three weeks.
UCC Demons make the long trek to Belfast to face an Ulster Elks side that has yet to hit form.
Dave Neal is a doubt for Elks with a shoulder injury but their coach, Deirdre Brennan, is confident they will progress from their much improved display in Killester last weekend.
“We will be looking to build on our improved performance against Killester when we take on Demons at home on Saturday night,” she said. “It will be a tough game against a team that has lost only a few games over the past two seasons – if I have a full squad it will be a good measure of how far we have come and how far we have yet to travel.”
Demons’ coach Luke D’Alessio has not taken his foot off the pedal since last Friday night.
“We have worked hard on our defence this week as there is still a lot of room for improvement in that area. We must be a dominant rebounding team and we need to contain the threat of Dave Neal, Paul Cummins and Ian O’Boyle.”
UL Eagles will be protecting their unbeaten record when they travel to UCD/Marian on Sunday. Marian’s bid to create an upset will not be helped by the absence of Luke McCrone who is sidelined with an ankle injury.
DCU Saints are flying high in the Northern Conference but their credentials will be tested when they take on surprise package Belfast Star.
Star welcome back Neal McCotter, who missed the club’s last outing due to an ankle injury but there is a question mark over the fitness of Scott Summersgill (groin strain) and Stephen Dawson (sprained ankle).
The action resumes in the IrishSport.TV Women’s SuperLeague, with defending champions, Team Montenotte Hotel Cork, hosting newcomers, Sligo All Stars, while DCU Mercy welcome Meteors to the DCU Sports Centre.
Tolka Rovers face a tough trip away to UL with Killester set to welcome Bausch & Lomb Waterford Wildcats to Clontarf.
