Tigers fury at ‘condensation’ points deduction
The controversy arose when there was found to be condensation on the court at the Tralee Sports Complex and the game was stopped with seven minutes remaining on the clock.
Apparently it was agreed by everyone that the game be moved to Mounthawk Gym where the club trains and, within minutes, that was done.
The game was finished without any further problems but subsequently there was a protest by Limerick and yesterday Tigers were informed that, as a result of that, the points for the game had been deducted resulting in the loss of their unblemished record.
The SuperLeague Management Board said yesterday that the decision was to award the game to Limerick Lions at a score line of 20-0, citing regulation 7.6.7 where it refers to procedures that apply when a game is disrupted and subsequently abandoned for the reason of condensation on the floor of the court.
“While the officials on the evening in question agreed to move the game to an alternative venue, this was done under protest from Limerick Lions. Lions were correct in their assessment that the game should not have been moved to an alternative venue when the reason for the disruption is condensation,” the Board said.
Tralee’s own Board were scheduled to meet last night to consider the matter, its implications and what action, if any, they might take.
Tigers got their season off to a flying start against UCC Demons and have won all their games to date. They will be at full strength for tomorrow night’s visit from Ballina. Ballina, too, are enjoying a spectacular run with four straight wins since losing to Limerick in their opening game of the season.
But coach Terry Kennedy will have to plan for this one without the services of Ronan McGarrity and — more long term — Jimmy Boston, who has returned to United States for family reasons.
Since Boston’s arrival, Ballina are unbeaten and Terry Kennedy paid special tribute to him yesterday: “Jimmy was an excellent player for us, and typified this with his huge 4th period display in the Neptune Stadium in which he scored 15 points in the last four minutes.”
UCC Demons will travel to Killarney desperate to take the points from Mustang Sally’s St Paul’s following their heartbreaking one point defeat to DART Killester in their last outing.
DCU Saints are worrying over the fitness of Kenny Gamble, who is suffering with flu ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Clontarf to face DART Killester.
Limerick Lions play host to Neptune who are awaiting results of Michael De Corso’s fitness test to see if he has sufficiently recovered from a groin injury that sidelined him last weekend.
UCD/Marian will be at full strength for Hoops tomorrow night. Hoops hope to welcome Ciaran White back into the fold after missing last weekend’s defeat away to Merry Monk Ballina.
In the Womens SuperLeague, DCU Mercy and unbeaten Team Montenotte Hotel Cork meet in the clash of the Titans.
DCU will be without Emma Riley, who is set for a scan on a knee injury on Monday, while the Woods sisters, Becky and Sarah, are unavailable due to their cross country commitments in Holland.
Unbeaten Team Montenotte Hotel Cork will have to plan without the services of influential star Jennifer Strong due to injury.
Meteors will be without Kate Mulins and Mairead Kirby due to graduation commitments and Eimear Naughton misses out due to illness while Tolka Rovers will be without Trish O’Sullivan due to graduation commitments for their clash.
