Does anyone know where Shevchenko is?
Just before the season started we were told that he had a “slight back strain” and we haven’t seen hide nor hair of him since. Despite not being fit to play for Chelsea, be on the bench or even train with the team, he managed to play 50 minutes for the Ukraine last week. He apparently is also down to play in some charity game later this month.
Chelsea themselves have remained very tight-lipped on the whole affair. I scoured the match-day programme and there was not one mention of him; Chelsea TV have not even uttered his name since pre-season. Something fishy is going on here. This could be a valuable lesson learnt, albeit a very expensive one, to our owner — do not interfere in the team. I swear that if I see another one of our multi-million pound players bugger off to another club, while we still pick up a good proportion of his wages, I will not be responsible for my actions!
Jose Mourinho last week announced that following the acquisition of Barcelona’s third choice right-back that there would be no more transfers in within this transfer window. So do we assume that Alves is no longer an option? As you can no doubt work out, I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the signing of Beletti this week. I understand that Chelsea have (all be it a little late) adopted a tough stance on inflated prices for transfer targets and I welcome it wholeheartedly. But it does seem akin to looking to buy sirloin steak and ending up with chopped liver — could we have gone for something somewhere in the middle? Robben has finally left us and I have to say that I am gutted. I don’t care that he was injured more than he was fit — when he did play, we won more games and scored more goals. He and Joe Cole were our most creative players and now with Robben gone and Cole seemingly having only a very limited part to play at the moment, the football we are playing is not pretty.
DON’T get me wrong, I am not the kind of fan that demands show pony football. I can appreciate a dogged and efficient defensive display, but at the moment, we haven’t really even got that. Ben Haim is slow, John Terry has never exactly been fast — our current problems at right-back are well documented so it seems that our opening game against Birmingham was not a pre-cursor to what was to follow.
Little quiz for Liverpool fans. Who said “Villa shouldn’t be moaning about the decision. These things even themselves out over the course of the season.”
I’ll give you another clue; he also said: “It wasn’t a penalty and I hope he comes out and says sorry now.” — he also stamped his foot and said that he was telling his mum. OK I made that last bit up. Of course it was the hypocrite that is Stevie G! Well done to all those of you who got that right.
I’d like to say well done to Frank Lampard who did manage to play (and score) for his county, despite a broken toe — no crying off for this lion. Then to score the winner for club too and play a full 90 just proves what a character he has to beat the moronic boo boys.
Villa this weekend and I hate playing them at their place — haven’t done particularly well for quite some time and we always manage to make one of their average players look world class. We need to maintain the gap between ourselves and United and need to keep winning so Jose needs to go for it.
Cech looks ill at ease at the moment. I don’t know if he is just going through a bad patch, or whether he has the same colly-wobbles as I do at seeing Ben Haim and or Glen Johnson in front of him.
The international break and the closure of the transfer window that follows the Villa game will hopefully allow injuries to heal properly and any outstanding deals to be completed. Then we can really get down to business. We’re not playing well but we’re top of the league, early days I know but once we get there we’re often pretty stubborn to shift so good to see. If Liverpool win the game in hand they could overtake us, but a bird in the hand and all that.
