Sutherland targeting golden moment

DARREN SUTHERLAND will go into next week’s European Union Boxing Championships at the National Stadium as the favourite to win the gold medal at middleweight but the two-time national senior champion is not taking anything for granted.

The 25 year old Dubliner is ranked third on the European list but, with the two boxers above him on the list ineligible to compete in the Dublin showpiece, he is ranked No 1 for the tournament.

“We always say rankings are just a bit of paper and the end of the day you have to go in there and perform,” he said. “I will be going into these championships with very high hopes – high expectations – but I’ll take each fight as it comes. That is always my game.
