It was nail-biting stuff throughout the Western Union stage that took the survivors around three laps of the Killorglin-Beaufort loop and then five laps of the notoriously-tough Donal McKenna circuit.

On the first trip around the 15-mile loop, last year’s winner, Paul Healion (Murphy & Gunn/Newlyn/Sean Kelly RT), attacked with Dungarvan man, Rory Wyley (Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers), and they were joined by Toby Neave (Surrey League), Dubliner Ciaran Cassidy (MyHome.ie/BDBC), Vincent Gleeson (West Clare) and Limerick’s Tom Shanahan.
