Taylor sets sights on English champion
Last Friday in Fermoy, took Kultysheva apart with a dazzling display to record her third victory of the year.
With the opposition frightened off, she will be moving up to light welterweight to take on the English champion, Amanda Coulson, who captains the England team.
The fact that she is stepping up a weight division sees Taylor is exploring uncharted territory but the power of her punching in recent contests suggests that she is equal to the task.
While the English camp is quietly confident, Taylor is unlikely to lose an unblemished record that stretches back to the European championships two years ago, when she became the first Irish boxer to win a European title since Paul Griffin won his gold medal in Gothenburg in 1991.
Ireland’s other ranked international, Alanna Murphy (East Side, Belfast), will be returning to action following injury when she takes on Fiona Hayes from the Harringay Police ABC.
Dungarvan’s Clara Fraher is on the Irish team and she will have a huge following when she steps in against Yasmin Rogers from the Southern Counties ABA.
Meanwhile, Belfast coach Tony Dunlop will help unbeaten Irish middleweight Andy Lee prepare for his next pro fight at the Theatre Club in Madison Square Gardens.
Lee will be targeting his eight victory against California-based Brazilian Cleiton Conceican at the Garden next month.
The 22-year-old Limerick man is due to appear on the undercard to fellow Irish middleweight John Duddy on the “Erin go Brawl” promotion on March 16.
Castleconnell, Limerick southpaw Lee, who remains undefeated after seven fights, says he is confident against an opponent who is giving away four inches in height.
Detroit-based Lee is presently in training camp with manager Emanuel Steward, Wladimir Klitschko, Jonathan Banks, Israel Garcia and Monty Barrett in Mallorca, Spain.
Lee said: “Conceican has a decent record and it will be no walkover but as always I am very confident of victory.
“My preparations are going exceptionally well and I and am training and sparring with some of the best boxers in the world.
Meanwhile, Lee heads back to the Kronk Gym in Detroit next Saturday and Tony Dunlop from the Belfast Kronk gym will fly out to help him prepare for the Conceican fight.
New York-based Duddy will headline the March 16 promotion against Anthony Bonsante, former star of the NBC reality show ‘The Contender’.
