Cork Week is truly international

THIS year’s Cork Week Grand Prix regatta, the biggest sailing event in the world run by a single club, will once more attract yachts and sailors from all over the world.

Cork Week 2006 which takes place from July 15 to 21, legendarily attracts sailors for the quality of its sailing and some of the most spectacular yachts in the world will be coming to the biennial event at the Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven, with the first ever entries from the Philippines, South Africa and Sweden having already been received.

Speaking at the ceremony, where Miller Genuine Draft announced that it will be the Official Beer sponsor for Cork Week 2006, Seamus Daly, brand manager, Miller Genuine Draft, said that Miller’s continued association with the event “reinforces their ongoing commitment to the sporting and cultural life of Cork City and County and we look forward to an exhilarating series of events at Crosshaven in July.”

Cork Week chairman Ian Venner paid tribute to Miller and thanked them for their support. “Cork Week is a massive undertaking, this is the largest regatta in Europe run by a single club and we could not run it without the kind assistance of sponsors such as Miller.

“It takes a lot of effort to make an event like this work but we manage it, and not only does the sailing world benefit through having a world-class regatta, but also this region gains through the event. I don’t just mean economically, though that is a major factor, but the standing that we have as probably ‘the most welcoming regatta in the world’ is something that money can’t buy. “We have this reputation as a result of making certain that we provide the best racing we can on water, and on shore side that we make available the best of entertainment, food and drink.”

In addition to top class racing, the fabled on-shore tented village has become one of the main ingredients in the success of Cork Week. This year’s entertainment line-up is promised to be very comprehensive.
