Spears ban for positive cocaine test

VIENNA WOODS Glanmire basketball player Adriana Spears has received a two-year ban after testing positive for cocaine.

In a statement issued last night, the Irish Sports Council said the independent Irish Sport Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel found that Spears, who played this year in the Basketball Ireland Women’s Super League had committed an anti-doping rule violation.

“The rule violation is that contrary to Article 2.1 of the Rules, the presence of a prohibited substance or its metabolite, cocaine, was found in a sample of her urine collected in competition testing at the Vienna Woods Glanmire v Mercy Coolock match on 27th November 2004,” the statement said.

“Ms Spears has been sanctioned by the imposition on her of a period of two years ineligibility from participation in all sport effective from the date of her provisional suspension, the 20th December 2004,” it added.
