Sato happy he can do job for BAR

FORMER Jordan driver Takuma Sato is confident he can fill Jacques Villeneuve’s sizeable shoes after being confirmed as the former world champion’s replacement at BAR next season.

Sato happy he can do job for BAR

Villeneuve has been dropped by BAR following a difficult season, with Sato confirmed as Jenson Button’s team-mate for 2004.

Sato, the 2001 British Formula Three champion, admitted his year’s sabbatical from the Formula One grid had been a frustrating experience but one which he claims will leave him better placed to succeed. He said: “Of course, I am extremely happy to be confirmed as race driver for BAR next year.

"This is what I have been working hard all year to achieve and now that the decision is made I am looking forward to proving myself again in the team next year.”

He has spent this season as BAR’s test driver following his debut year in 2002 with Jordan and his promotion to a race seat comes with the full blessing on Japanese engine supplier Honda.

In his year at Jordan, the 26-year-old showed glimpses of his speed but was let down too many times by over-eagerness which saw him suffer more than his fair share of accidents.

However, he is confident of showing his new-found maturity as he bids to replace one of Formula One’s most recognisable stars.

Sato added: “A year out of racing has been tough for me, but I am confident that the work we have done this year in testing has been extremely valuable in helping me and the team become a strong partnership.

“I have built good relationships with many people in the team this year and feel very positive that together we can be successful next season. Now, of course, I can’t wait to start the build-up to the Australian Grand Prix in March.”

Team boss David Richards claims Sato is the perfect partner for Button, who was signed on a long-term contract at the end of last season.

He said: “With Jenson moving into his fifth season in Formula One and his second with BAR, he will provide the counter-balance of experience alongside the fresh enthusiasm of Takuma. A young and hungry driver line-up is essential for us to move closer to achieving our championship ambitions.”

Villeneuve’s future in the sport is unclear. There are no vacancies in Formula One’s top four teams, while a season with the likes of Jordan or Minardi is unlikely to appeal, especially as he would have to take a massive pay cut for the privilege.
