Evans’ double delight as Scott wins sibling rivalry to take Irish title

The 18-year-old, ranked first in Ireland and 92nd in the world, defeated older brother Lee 15-12; 15-16 in the first meeting of siblings in a decider in the competition’s history.

There was further success for Evans as he partnered Brian Smith to land the Doubles title, overcoming the Toppings, Bruce and Mark, 15-7; 15-11.

Said the new champion: “I’m really happy. It was both easy and difficult playing my brother in a final. It’s difficult because I knew I had to play well and it was tough to prepare mentally for the game. But it was easier because I know his game so well.

“But winning the doubles was also special. Brian and I don’t practice too much together. We never thought we would beat the lads because they have been so dominant in the doubles for the last couple of years.”

Evans returns to Denmark tomorrow he lives and trains in the acclaimed International Badminton Academy. But his stay will be brief, as he flies back home at the weekend before heading to Greece, where Ireland compete in the Thomas Cup.

He hopes brother Lee will also be on the plane. The team is to be announced later today.

Said Lee: “Hopefully I will make it. I am happy enough with my performance in the final. I’ve played him a couple of times but this was the first time that I lost.

In the Women’s Singles Final, Keelin Fox beat defending champion Erin Keery 11-7; 11-2. It was a miserable day for Keery who was also beaten in the Doubles final.
