Heartbreak for Cobh
Extra time had failed to decide the tie after Sarah Beth Musgrave had hit the net for the Cork team with Sophie Latimer doing likewise for Quins.
It then came down to penalties and the Belfast team advanced 3/2.
No problems, however, for Ashton who hit Galway visitors Kinvara for six at the Ashton School Grounds.
Michelle Sliney and Gene Casey had two apiece while Aine Cummins and Mags Ryan also got their names on the scoresheet. Marguerite Cornice scored Kinvara’s only goal.
An easy win also for Cork Harlequins seconds who defeated Kilkenny 4-0 at Farmers Cross. In an evenly contested first half, Fiona Higgins’ goal was the difference but the home side dominated after this and goals from Jane Chapple, Jayne O’Brien and Julia O’Halloran saw them run out comfortable winners.
No joy for the other Munster clubs involved as Bandon, Church of Ireland, Waterford and Belvedere made their exit.
Carol Ann Lockhart scored twice and Seonaidh Black added another in Coleraine’s 3-0 defeat of Bandon while Edel Ward and Brede Brohan scored two as Corinthians ousted Belvedere.
Church of Ireland lost out narrowly (2-1) to Clontarf while in the remaining tie, Glenanne hit five to Waterford’s one.
Meanwhile in the O’Brien's Irish Sandwich Bar Munster Senior League, Catholic Institute won the Limerick derby clash with University of Limerick 2-1.
Elaine Bromell and Kim Daly were on target for Institute while Sarah Kiely replied for the students.
At Bandon, the home side, with a goal from Karen Barry, accounted for UCC in another MSL tie.
