Arveladze got off lightly with taunts from supporters

Dear Sir

Arveladze got off lightly with taunts from supporters

They seemed to feel that the chants and boos from the crowd were unsporting.

Mr Arveladze chose to play for Rangers, who have just completed an extremely successful domestic season in Scotland. Neither Rangers nor their supporters have ever been known for their sporting behaviour, especially in the company of any opposing player or supporter felt to harbour "Fenian tendencies."

It would not be too unreasonable to suggest that the ethos at Rangers is anathema to many people in this country.

Before the match, Irish supporters were exhorted to create a hostile atmosphere for the opposition as it was felt that our team had not been receiving sufficient backing during earlier matches.

Football is not just a matter of "kicking a ball about" it is an extremely important and uplifting facet of many peoples' lives and success has a totally disproportionate effect on national morale.

As a very small nation, Ireland suffers a considerable disadvantage when competing against those who have far greater player resources.

We need, therefore to make the most of what is available, including our supporters.

When Ireland played in Tiblisi, objects, including a knife, were thrown at Irish players. Mr Arveladze got off lightly.
