UCC are three-time losers

THE combined division one and two cup in women’s hockey saw eight games being played between Saturday and yesterday and for UCC it was a bad weekend, with all three of their sides in action crashing out.

There were wins for Church of Ireland I, Harlequins I and II, Belvedere, Bandon, Catholic Institute, University of Limerick and Fermoy.

In a great game at the Mardyke yesterday Fermoy got the better of UCC III after extra-time, thanks to two goals from Nicola Howard.

Howard put them in front in the first half but Fiona Murphy slotted home an Eadaoin O’Sullivan shot, following a penalty corner, to send the game to extra-time.

Howard got on the end of a great move down the wing to seal their victory.

Church of Ireland I came out tops in their tie with their seconds. Karen Hales put them in front from a penalty corner and Sinead O’Leary secured their win.

Harlequins I were always in control as they eased past Waterford 3-0 with goals from Karen Bateman, Jane Chapple and Marissa Ahern. Their seconds had a 4-0 win over UCC II, with Emily Kenefick getting a second-half hat-trick after Sue Barry had opened the scoring for them.

Belvedere continued their good run with a 3-0 win over Church of Ireland III, Miriam Crowley getting two and Anne Murray one.

University of Limerick had a 4-0 win over UCC I at the Mardyke. A double from Eimear Cregan and one each from Elaine Hall and Karen Kelly saw them into the next round.

Catholic Institute’s Irish international Elaine Bromell was on the mark twice in their 2-1 win over Ashton, with Jane Mackey replying.

Bandon got the better of Catholic Institute II, Liz Buttimer (two) and Laura Crowley getting the goals. Áine McCarthy replied for Institute.
