A Mug's Game: Sometimes it ain’t what you do but what you don’t do

Just so that you know in advance, today’s column is not a breathless recitation of glorious victories or agonising short-head defeats, of riches won and lost, of near-misses that will forever leave one rueing what might have been. There are afternoons in racing where nothing much happens, even at Cheltenham, and this will be one of them. Fair enough?
The day begins in suitably downbeat style with a message. “Tough looking card. Keep the bets small.” Not what I wanted to hear but at least it backs up what a quick glance last night at the seven races told me and makes me determined not to fritter away yesterday’s winnings out of boredom. Coming in with €82.42 from Tuesday I do not intend to be left with €32.42 by close of play.
