The night before Dublin played Cork in Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the final round of the 2011 league, I sent Davy Fitzgerald, who was then managing Waterford, a text message. “Don’t let me down tomorrow.” 

I, and all of us in the Dublin camp, needed a favour. The maths were simple. Dublin needed to win or draw to reach the league final, but we were only guaranteed to make it if Waterford beat Galway.
