“You're welcome to my home phone number, gentlemen,” Ron Atkinson told reporters at his first press conference as Manchester United manager in 1981. “But please remember not to ring me during The Sweeney.”
It would be wrong to say that the Ron Atkinson who left the club five years later was a dried-up husk of the man who had arrived with the one-liners and telephone numbers guaranteed to win over a media audience. But he was certainly more embittered.
