SOME years ago, at a particular low point during Martin O’Neill’s tenure as Republic of Ireland manager, I wrote a mission statement, a way forward for Irish football that was tethered to the radical principle of socialism. The idea was to nationalise Irish football. 

To encourage our best young players to stay. To pour everything into our domestic league, and, if required, our top domestic club. Prioritise qualification for the group stages of the Champions League. Go full 1986 Steaua Bucharest, retro kit and all.
