Whatever about the lamentations that greeted Donegal’s arrival as a force in Gaelic football in 2011, you can be damn sure there were aspiring coaches all around the country taking notes just to see if there were elements of the ultra-defensive game that could be put to use with their own teams.

Kieran McGeeney is one such coach and although coaching with Kildare at the time of Donegal’s emergence, there were signs in Armagh’s approach to their quarter-final this summer that the best elements of the Jim McGuinness era have transferred quite nicely across the province of Ulster.
