A beneficial, if depressing, week for Irish athletes

Last April one year, Carol Sharp picked up the phone in Edinburgh and put a call through to her daughter Lynsey in the United States.

It was 5am on the receiver’s end of the line, but Carol was determined that the news she had just heard should reach her child’s ears via a friendly voice.

Lynsey duly burst into tears.
