Shelbourne to host Breeders Cup style Night Of Stars

Minister Shane McEntee announced the details at a reception in Shelbourne Park and warmly welcomed what he described as a “private initiative that shows the enthusiasm and vibrancy of the Irish greyhound industry”.

The Night of Stars will comprise eight Championship one-off races which will boast total prizemoney of €92,000. The races will be over all the relevant distances between 350 yards and 850 yards.

The winners of each of the eight races will receive €10,000 with the runners-up claiming €1,000 and the thirds €500. Entry fee will be €300.

Each race will be individually sponsored while there will be Club Membership tickets on sale at €100 per head to include dinner/wine and Support. The money raised from these tickets will go towards the sponsorship and operational costs of the meeting.

The Night of Stars is a private support operation geared to provide the sport with a massive end of season celebration. The committee is chaired by Pat O’Donovan, former manager at Harolds Cross and RTE Radio Producer.

Pat O’Donovan said: “The idea was mooted over a few drinks — a fair few — in Dobbins Restaurant back in January and was enthusiastically received.

“It all started from there, which goes to prove that all talk in drink is not just baloney.

“IGB chairman Phil Meaney was also very enthusiastic about it and he has given us great support, as has IGB CEO Adrian Neilan.
