BY 5pm yesterday, journalists were queuing up on Twitter to condemn Alex Ferguson for enforcing a media blackout after Manchester United’s crushing defeat to Liverpool.

Yet keeping their counsel afterwards was probably one of the only things United did right all day.

Having seen the damage inflicted on Nani’s leg by Jamie Carragher’s studs — an ugly gaping gash an inch wide well above the top of his shin-pad — it is unlikely Ferguson would have been able to restrain himself from further improper remarks.
