THE most striking difference between Thurles Sars and De La Salle is the number of county titles won — Sars have 31 in Tipperary and are top of the class, De La Salle have only two in Waterford.

However — and this is important — De La Salle’s two county titles have come in the last three years, and immediately after they won their first, in 2007, they went on to win the Munster championship. Thurles Sars have yet to achieve that.

What De La Salle have won in the last few years is a massive reflection on the great work being done at underage and adult level. I have to single out one man though; no, not Derek McGrath, nor Dermot Dooley, the two guys who coached the college to the Harty Cup and All-Ireland double, and did it two years in a row, but John Mullane.
