All Star judges wrong to snub Cork forwards
There’s always some controversy about selections, indeed they’d be something wrong if there wasn’t.
There are always going to be close calls and sometimes glaring omissions.
In that regard 2010 didn’t disappoint.
That Cork managed just four All Stars after winning the NFL Division 1 title and the All-Ireland championship is surprising. That they failed to have a forward included is unprecedented and unacceptable.
There were three Cork attackers who were strong contenders for an award – Paddy Kelly, Donncha O’Connor and Daniel Goulding.
Goulding can feel most aggrieved given his man of the match performance in the All-Ireland.
Which was worth an All Star on its own.
Cork goalkeeper Alan Quirke must also have been very close to selection as well, as he had a faultless year.
But that’s the past and credit the Cork lads for accepting the situation.
One player I was glad to see honoured though, was Kildare’s Johnny Doyle.
For a decade now, he has been a one man scoring machine for the Lilywhites and it was wonderful to see him get national recognition.
There was little real controversy about the hurling equivalent.
All-Ireland champions Tipperary have six men on the team and collected both the Player and Young Player of the Year Awards.
Kilkenny’s great Tommy Walsh was rightly honoured once again as he edges ever closer to being the most decorated All Star in history.
Now we await the GPA Awards. It will be interesting to see the difference in opinions!!
